CMMC Fundamentals: Framework Overview is the foundational course in the CMMC Brass Tacks series and provides learners with a comprehensive introduction to the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program. Designed for defense contractors, cybersecurity professionals, and compliance stakeholders, this course explains why the CMMC was created and how it strengthens the cybersecurity posture of the Defense Industrial Base (DIB).Learners will explore the national security risks driving the CMMC, including threats to the Defense Supply Chain and real-world cyber incidents that highlight the consequences of inadequate cybersecurity controls. The course clearly defines Federal Contract Information (FCI) and Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI), explaining why these data types must be protected and how they flow between prime contractors, subcontractors, and government systems.The course provides a structured overview of the CMMC 2.0 framework, including its three certification levels, assessment types, and maturity model. It also examines how CMMC aligns with and builds upon key regulations and standards such as FAR 52.204-21, DFARS 252.204-7012, NIST SP 800-171, and NIST SP 800-172.In addition, learners will be introduced to the CMMC ecosystem, including the roles of the DoD, Cyber AB, CAICO, C3PAOs, contractors, and certified practitioners.
